About 6 years ago, I could not walk without pain and had finally decided to get an MRI. I went to a prominent LA Hospital to have the pictures looked at. The radiologist told me that I had degenerative disk disease and two herniated disks, and that I would have to manage my pain for the rest of my life, eventually looking to surgery. Manage my pain? Surgery? I couldn’t believe it. I had been fit my whole life, athletic. How could this happen to me? I proceeded to see just about every kind of healer one might find in Los Angeles (And that is every kind of healer!), but my condition was not improving. I was very scared.
One day a friend of mine suggested I see a Sikh man named Guru Prem. I thought to myself cynically, ‘Just what I need...A Guru! I can see the robes and the beard now.’ That very same night my wife, Kia, and I went out to dinner at Real Food Daily on La Cienega. There was a nice woman sitting by herself at the table next to us. We struck up a conversation and got on the subject of bad backs. She looked at me and said, “Well, if you have a bad back you really ought to go see this man named Guru Prem.” I may not know a lot, but I know enough to listen when these types of things occur. The next morning I called Guru Prem and said, “Guru Prem, apparently I am supposed to come see you.” He chuckled. “Well, we better get you in here then,” he said.
I have now been seeing Guru Prem regularly since then. I have taken no medication at all for my back and certainly have not had surgery. I am in no pain save for occasional tweaks I get when I ask too much of my body. My life has changed profoundly in this time and I have healed myself as the direct result of his guidance and inspiration. I had tremendous good fortune to find a “healer” who understood the body’s capacity to heal and who could teach me how to align myself to stack the healing odds in my favor. The single most important piece of advice I can extend is to surround yourself with people who are healthy, knowledgeable and who support your growth as a Human Being. And then of course, you must make yourself into one of these people for those others who you can support.
